I’ll be honest, I haven’t paid all that much attention to the contract squabbles going on between the NFL & the referees union. Why would I? The sun is finally out in Seattle and the NBA and NHL playoffs are at full speed, there just isn’t room in the noggin to be all that concerned with the impasse between the shield and their referees.
But the time to start paying attention could be rapidly approaching. According to Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com, the NFL is already making plans to hire replacement officials which means we’d have to face the reality of a world with less Ed Hochuli. Now you’ve got my attention.
Hochuli could be the worst ref in the NFL but is beloved for his huge guns and long-winded explanations of the new playoff overtime rules. OK, beloved is a little strong…but you know who he is, which is more than you can say for most refs, right?
Don’t despair fans of Hochuli’s pipes, we have a suitable replacement. Meet MLS referee Hilario Grajeda, owner of two rocket launchers attached at the shoulder. Grajeda has been known to utter the phrase “whatcha gonna do when the 24 inch pythons drop a yellow card on you!” during games which is way cooler than the Ed Hochuli workout, published on SI.com back in 1996.
