According to the 6th annual Sports Business Daily Reader Survey 29% of their almost 2,000 responders believe raising ticket prices are the biggest threat to Sports. In the NFL alone ticket prices have gone up 37% over the last 6 years. The NBA, MLB and NHL have also raised prices, albeit at a slower rate, despite average game attendance falling.
Some other interesting results from the survey included how many hours per week readers spend watching or attending sporting events. A whopping 22.5% spend 15 hours or more per week watching sporting events. As far as the biggest sports business story of the year – South Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup (21.9%) edged out LeBron James making “The Decision” on ESPN (20.7%).
Peyton Manning continues to be Sports most marketable athlete, which comes as no surprise to anyone that owns a TV. Manning destroyed the competition with almost 40% of the votes, Derek Jeter was the next closest athlete with 18%.
