Become a Video Production Intern with the Philadelphia Union of the MLS

To be successful in sports broadcasting it takes more than just getting a good degree, you need to gain real-life, hands-on experience. One of the absolute best ways to gain experience is to take on as many sports internships as you can, like the recently posted video production internship with the Philadelphia Union.

As part of this internship you’ll gain exposure to the technical skills necessary for video production jobs, get used to the rhythm of working in sports broadcasting (i.e. nights, weekends, high pressure, tight deadlines) and have a great addition to your resume. Now when you graduate you’ll have some incredible skills and experience that will stand out from the crowd.

It’s important to be selective when choosing your internships, make sure you’ll have opportunity to be hands-on, not just watching someone else. This video production internship with the Philadelphia Union is a great opportunity because it is clearly hands-on:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design and creation of audio/video content and graphics for in-stadium video board and website.
• Editing of game video and audio content.
• Shooting game footage, press conferences, outside events, etc.
• Logging and archiving footage.
• Maintaining all elements of the control room.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro, Motion, Live Type), Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator.
• Knowledge of Camera Operation and Lighting, and Audio set-up.
• Creating original content.
• Willing to work nights, weekends and possible holidays.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to creatively solve problems when presented with task.

Even if you aren’t qualified for this internship, you can learn what teams and sports networks are expecting from their interns and then work to gain qualification. Here’s what I mean: from reading this internship posting you can see how important knowing Final Cut Pro is for video production jobs. If you don’t know how to use Final Cut Pro, maybe now is a good time to learn it. Wondering how? You can take an online Final Cut Pro course through MediaBistro which will greatly enhance your future marketability.

Don’t just look at job postings and think “I don’t have the necessary skills” – find out what employers are looking for and then go get the skills! MediaBistro has a wide range of online courses ranging from Sports Journalism, to Copy Editing, to TV News Writing – if you don’t have the expertise, MediaBistro can help you!
